Welcoming a new baby into the family is a life changing event for any family! New Westminster Family Place is here to help.  Since 1989 families with children from newborn to aged five have been a part of our supportive programming through our family drop in programs and parent support programs.  Families meet new friends, learn about their child’s development and connect with other community resources.

Our programming includes a family drop-in which operates five day a week at 93 Sixth Street, a drop-in program at Lord Kelvin Elementary 3 days a week and programs at the food bank and Qayqayt Elementary.  The children enjoy creative play, art, songs and stories in our active playrooms with our early childhood educators.  Parent support includes various learning opportunities, visits by child development specialists, a speech and hearing therapist, a public health nurse and a quiet moment to enjoy a cup of coffee.  Our family support workers are available at each session to lend a supportive ear and assist with community information and referrals to other resources.

As part of our sustainability planning, New Westminster Family Place is seeking community leaders with committee and/or board volunteer experience to participate in developing the organization and its governance, raising New Westminster Family Place’s profile, and fundraising efforts.


The New Westminster Family Place board is accountable our members, participants, and community for the governance of our organization. The board is also responsible for the eight roles and responsibilities of governance including:

  • Mission & vision
  • Support the executive director
  • Fiscal oversight
  • Strategic planning
  • Public image
  • Manage risk
  • Develop resources
  • Monitor programs

Time & Term Commitment: Board Members can expect to volunteer approximately 5 hours a month for a two-year term. This time commitment includes monthly board and committee meetings, and the work required between meetings. Attendance at the Annual General Meeting is also required.


Individuals with past experience working with children, in the not-for-profit sector, or on a governance board are preferred.
